Panasonic g7: video suddenly stops recording
I have had my Panasonic G7 for about 5 months now and I've never had any issues. Just about 2 weeks ago I noticed that video recordings randomly cut out without warning. I'm making a video, and suddenly it just stops recording. Sometimes 30 seconds in, sometimes more and sometimes less, and sometimes the problem doesn't happen. I also noticed something interesting on the remaining video timer...its not moving. It just says 29:59, even though I have made a few minutes of video on the card. My card is a transcend class 10 U3, 64gb. I did drop the camera on concrete, but that was 5 months ago, and these problems started 2 weeks ago. Any idea? Thanks

Re: Panasonic g7: video suddenly stops recording
I'm afraid that this often happens when complex electro-mechanical devices suffer an impact or drop. A component or assembly suffers damage, but that damage doesn't immediately result in an obvious malfunction.
Over time, the damaged component degrades further and malfunctions start to occur.
I suggest getting the camera into your nearest Panasonic service centre at your earliest opportunity.

Apologies if I'm stating the obvious, but before sending it back to Panasonic try it with a different SD card if you can. It is possible that the SD card is corrupted in a way that leads to this symptom. If you don't have another card to try at least reformat the card in the camera to see if it makes a difference. You could also check the SD file structure using your computer.

Re: Panasonic g7: video suddenly stops recording
As I recall, in many regions where these cameras are sold they're limited to a 30 minute record time. The reason has to do with the differences between how dedicated video cameras and still cameras with video capability are regulated and sold.
So I think this is normal behavior for your camera.

I disagree, he said that sometimes the video stops recording after 30 seconds, not 30 minutes.
As was suggested, I'd try another SD card before taking more-involved steps, like sending it to Panasonic. If you don't have another card, at least format the card you have (I'd format it in the camera, not with a computer), and see if that changes anything.
But if a different, good card doesn't change anything, I'd probably send it in for repair, unless Panasonic has another suggestion.
I don't have a G7, so I don't know what the options are. But do you get different results with different video settings? For instance, the lowest video resolution/bitrate, to make it easier on the card?

Was your SD card near full? This past summer I shot quite a bit of 4K video using a Lexar 128GB U3 card. No problems at first. When the card was maybe 80-90% full, it would stop recording randomly. A 30s clip here, a 9s clip there...

Re: Panasonic g7: video suddenly stops recording
I can't speak to the issue of the OP, but yesterday my G7 decided it didn't want to either take pictures or keep the screen on consistently. Of course this had to happen when I was using it for work (worked fine in all my tests at home). It was outside and temps were about 40 degrees Fahrenheit but I wouldn't think that would be extreme enough to impact things.
Since I bought mine as an open box item I'm going to be sending it back and just paying the additional costs for a new one.

Re: Panasonic g7: video suddenly stops recording
Thanks everyone for the advice. I'll try reformatting the card and go from there. Hopefully that's the issue. But it's weird how the remaining video remains at 29:59. I hope the recent update didn't cause the issue?

Re: Panasonic g7: video suddenly stops recording
Funny, I had the exact opposite happen to me with my G7. I was recording video - thought I'd stopped, and proceeded to switch the mode dial from movie to aperture priority to take some stills. End result was that the G7 was still recording video and nothing I hit would stop it. Had to pull the battery in the end....

I had the same problem. I had the camera for week and on several occasions while recording 4K video, the camera would not stop recording. the record button did not work, I could not power the camera down, none of the controls worked. Nothing! Just kept recording. I had to eject the battery to stop the recording. I was using a Lexar 1000X, 128gb, 150MB/s SDXC card. I sent the camera back to B&H and the new one is arriving today so I will see.
I did see one other user with the same problem.

I have had a similar error once, but with photos. High speed photos until I pulled the battery.
-5 to -10C at the time.
( I have already changed the camera, SD card would not stay in the slot.)

I'm expperiencing the same issue.. brand new g7 100 shots, one hour recording..
It won't stop and if you pull the battery, you loose the last sequence. Did you solve your problem?

Re: Panasonic g7: video suddenly stops recording
It's most likely your memory card. If you use a cheaper one, it can't keep up, even though the specs say it should. When my card was empty-ish, it would never do it...only when getting full.

I wanted to update my previous post. I received the second G7 and used the same Lexar card. Same problem!! So I decided it might not be the camera and change cards. I got a (Transcend 64GB SDXC-UHS-I U3). Have shot for several weeks with no problems. In my opinion it was definitely the Lexar. The Lexar was UHS 11 and my guess (only a guess) is that UHS11 cards might be problematic.
A user on another forum had the same problems with the G7 and the Lexar cards, and I suggested a switch to the Transcend card I am using. He switched to the same card, but with 128GB, and has had no more problems. Best of luck and sorry for the delay in my response. I wanted to use the G7 with the new card before I made my decision.

I've been using two 128gb Lexar 1000x's, and have had no problems shooting 4k, and I've shot at least 30 hours of footage. I haven't experienced any other issues either. The original issue of the camera not turning off and becoming unresponsive, I put down to switching the mode dial while the camera was recording.

Thanks for that. Are your Lexar cards UHS 1 or 11? Mine were UHS 11 and it is this spec that I thought was causing the problem. When I was having the problems of the camera not turning off it was definitely NOT because of switching the mode dial since I never do that. I shoot mostly 4K video and sometimes stills. It never happened shooting stills. So really, I don't know what to make of it. Just glad it has resolved. Thanks for offering your experience.

Re: Panasonic g7: video suddenly stops recording
I have the exact same problem, I use a combination of sony and sandisk card that i swap around with my two GH4's, neither of them have a problem.
It sometimes happens a few seconds in, but sometimes 17 minutes in. its very random.
It has happened when I use my voitlander on there, and moving the tripod around and the camera gets bumped, then it stops.
I'm suspicious its the lens mount, as you know when you press the lens release button it stops recording, I think its a bit faulty and sometimes the button contacts must come into contact some how.
It also gets me when I'm trying to navigate the q menu, and it jumps around like crazy.
Currently on the phone to panasonic tech, and he's trying to blame it on my lenses, when it happens on all my perfectly fine panasonic lenses, which always work flawlessly on my gh4's.
Re: Panasonic g7: video suddenly stops recording
I'm having pretty much the same problem but with the G85. It runs fine for about 10 mins then stops then goes for like 4 mins then it starts cutting off every 20-40 secs. It barely even gets warm so I don't think it's over heating. I tried 3 different batteries and 3 different types and brands of memory cards same problem no matter what. All those batteries and memory cards work perfectly in my other G85 too, so there must be some direct problem with the body. I feel like it might have something to do with the circuit inside maybe a bad capacitor because before it started this problem I noticed some of the screen info like the clip recording time would disappear for just a second and keep recording seems like that same problem turned into it just stopping recording. Anybody got ideas? Or what I should do about getting help from Panasonic or somebody? Thx.
